Sasha Gross is a mixed media painter inspired by the beauty of the natural landscape and local villages of Deer Isle, Maine. Her paintings seek to reflect the changing seasons of the area, the dynamics between the structural architecture of man-made objects and the lush complexity of nature, and the ephemeral qualities of light and shadow. In every piece, she strives to open a window for the viewer into her inner world, inviting her audience to step inside and immerse themselves in the magic she sees in her surroundings. Sasha’s work draws on themes of recognizing beauty in the quotidian, the similarities between cycles of creation in nature and the creative process, and the specific ecology and history of the Deer Isle peninsula.
Sasha recently relocated to Deer Isle, Maine, fulfilling her dream to live full time in the place where she spent her summers as a girl. Sasha's passion for painting has been an integral part of her life since childhood when she would paint the landscapes of the peninsula with her grandfather, who’s deep appreciation for art helped inspire her own. Her creative practice encompasses various mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and collage. The fluidity of her materials offers a productive tension between precise control and spontaneity in her work that allows her to create on the fly, in the moment. Her work process begins with broad strokes and washes of color, which she then layers with ever increasing detail. In this way, she draws the viewer’s eye towards moments of significance in her experience of the subject matter. She typically uses a slightly heightened color palette with which she further emphasizes her vision of the landscapes, gardens and architecture she depicts. Since becoming a mother, Sasha has found new insight into the act of creation that has spurred a flourishing of artistic energy and a new appreciation for the importance of personal artistic expression.
